Key Themes

• Precision diagnostics continue to lead: Precision oncology, MRD and liquid biopsy adoption are expanding as genomic profiling becomes more integrated into cancer care, supported by improving reimbursement and payer coverage.

• Genomics is moving deeper into clinical workflows: Falling sequencing costs are accelerating NGS and whole-genome sequencing adoption across oncology, rare disease and hematology, alongside growing demand for WES, WTS and other advanced molecular profiling technologies.

• Automation and AI are becoming core infrastructure: AI-powered analysis, automated testing and digital workflows are improving diagnostic efficiency and enabling laboratories to handle greater testing volumes. At the same time, decentralized testing is increasing demand for standardized and scalable workflows.

• Capital is rewarding differentiated platforms: Funding remains available for high-growth assets, but investors are becoming increasingly selective, favoring companies with differentiated technologies, scalable platforms and clear clinical or commercial utility. Reimbursement and compliance pressures are also contributing to consolidation among smaller players.

• Diagnostics are outperforming the broader sector: Diagnostics delivered approximately 10% performance over the last 12 months, ahead of Life Sciences Tools at 5%, Bioprocess Equipment at 2% and Diversified Life Sciences at 2%, reflecting strong investor interest in precision and oncology diagnostics.

Point-of-care diagnostics (POC) is evolving from a collection of standalone rapid tests into a broader ecosystem of connected, near-patient diagnostic platforms. The global POC market is expected to grow from approximately $29.3 billion in 2025 to $67.1 billion by 2030, supported by increasing demand for faster clinical decisions, decentralized healthcare delivery, and more sophisticated molecular testing.

A major driver of this transition is the shift from traditional antigen and lateral-flow testing toward multiplex PCR, isothermal amplification, microfluidics, biosensors, and sample-to-answer platforms. Molecular POC is emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas of the market, particularly across infectious disease, where rapid results can directly influence treatment and antimicrobial stewardship.

The commercial model is changing as well. The most attractive platforms increasingly use analyzers as the gateway to recurring cartridge, reagent, and consumable revenue. As a result, value creation depends less on the number of instruments placed and more on utilization, assay-menu breadth, and consumable pull-through. Connectivity is becoming another important differentiator as hospitals demand seamless LIS/EHR integration, remote quality control, and centralized device management.

From an investment perspective, opportunities extend well beyond mature POC platforms. Specialty diagnostics, emerging at-home testing, microfluidics, biosensors, and diagnostic middleware are creating adjacent opportunities across the value chain. The companies best positioned to capture long-term value will combine rapid and clinically actionable testing with recurring economics, workflow integration, reimbursement visibility, and scalable distribution.

Point-of-care diagnostics is therefore becoming less about simply performing a test outside the central laboratory and more about building an integrated diagnostic infrastructure around the patient.

Market Overview

Policy and funding risks weigh on near-term visibility

Macro Environment:

•Pharma R&D remains resilient, but spending is modality-specific — Global pharmaceutical R&D spending is projected to reach ~$250B by 2026, with investment concentrated in next-generation modalities such as GLP-1s, ADCs and cell/gene therapies.

•Biotech funding is rebounding, but selectivity remains high — Biotechnology funding surged in 1H26, up approximately 110%-141% versus the same period in 2025, supporting renewed demand for R&D tools while capital remains focused on higher-quality programs.

•Academic funding risk has eased, but growth remains modest — The finalized FY26 NIH budget included a ~1% increase rather than the previously proposed 40% cut, providing stability for academic and government end-markets.

•Policy overhangs are easing, but pricing scrutiny persists — Greater clarity around IRA drug pricing agreements and pharmaceutical tariff policy has improved customer planning visibility, though drug pricing pressure remains a structural constraint.

•Onshoring creates an equipment tailwind, but timing is back-end loaded — Section 232-related pharma onshoring and U.S.-based manufacturing commitments could provide a 10%-20% boost to hardware and equipment demand, with the impact expected to begin in 2027.

•Margin expansion is being driven by cost discipline— Companies are offsetting muted topline growth through opex control and efficiency measures rather than underlying demand strength.
